The Role of the School Nurse…What Every Parent Should Know

Children’s health care issues present a great challenge today with an increase of children with special health care needs entering schools daily.  School nurses have the education and skills to help students become their “healthiest selves” in order to achieve their greatest learning potential.  The School Nurse is available to:

  • Assess health needs of students and staff and assist with  appropriate referrals
  • Provide health screenings for vision, hearing, and other health problems
  • Provide emergency first aid
  • Give guidance and assistance to staff for safe medication delivery
  • Work with the school to identify safety hazards
  • Help communicable disease control, identify and refer students with contagious illnesses
  • Provide case management for students with chronic illnesses or other health related problems.

If your child has a chronic illness, special health needs, takes medications, or has a behavioral/emotional problem, please contact your school nurse.

Thank you, and remember, School Nurses are committed to caring for your children.
