New School Meal Requirements
Welcome Back!
Each new school year is met with feelings of excitement and anticipation for the new challenges and experiences each year holds. This year and for several years to come, students can look forward to “NEW” in the school meal program as well!
The Biggest Changes:
Calories and the amount of food served are now limited according to 3 different age groups; grades k-5, 6-8 and 9-12. This year, many menu items will be the same but the portion sizes may be different to meet the needs of each age group.
At least ½ cup of fruit will be served to grades K-4, ½ cup will be offered to grades 5-8 and 1 cup will be offered to grades 9-12.
At least ¾ cup of vegetables will be served to grades K-4, ¾ cup will be offered to grades 5-8 and 1 cup will be offered to grades 9-12.
STUDENTS IN GRADES 5-12 WILL NOW BE REQUIRED TO HAVE AT LEAST ½ CUP OF FRUIT OR VEGETABLE ON THEIR TRAY FOR IT TO COUNT AS A FULL MEAL.
Entrees items and bread items now have specific amounts to be served. In the past there were required minimums to meet, but you could serve more. Now there specific ranges for each age group. This means main entrees may not be as large as they were in the past. REMEMBER, though that there will be MORE FRUITS AND MORE VEGETABLES!
Gradual implementation of healthy changes:
This year, half of all grain products will be whole grain rich. Most of them already are!
Vegetables from the following groups will be served each week: DARK GREEN, ORANGE/RED, BEANS, STARCHY AND OTHER VEGETABLES.
Sodium levels will be reduced in recipes.
YOU CAN HELP:
Encourage your students to try new foods at home and at school.
Parents are always welcome to join students for meals! Elementary parents should call the school office by 9:00 am the day they plan to eat so they are included in the meal count.
