COVID Update - March 24, 2020

24 March 2020

Greenback Family,

Teachers are busy developing plans specific to their grade level and subject.  Please look for a phone call from your child’s teacher as we assess needs and concerns from our students and parents.  We will want our plan to include a mix of options, so we can create as engaging a program as possible.  Have you thought about setting up a “school space” for the home that has fewer distractions? I believe the structure will be important for kids who could certainly be feeling the anxiety of the adults.

PHS students will be able to pick up materials from their lockers per the schedule put out by the HS—that is for Wednesday.  The schedule follows this update and is on our website and Facebook pages.  Southwest is bagging up supplies and planning for a Thursday pickup—details will come out tomorrow.  LMS is tentatively planning for a Friday pickup—details to follow when they finalize the date, time, and process.

We finished our second day of food service.  We will run the same drop-offs for Wednesday but we will add some drop-off sites starting Thursday.  If you need delivery for a health or transportation reason, please email or call the buildings.  There can be limitations, but it will be important for kids to get outside and exercise…taking a walk.  Food service workers are taking extreme precautions to keep food safe.  We have added surgical masks as part of our protocol.  We will not require workers to use the masks at the drop-off site…but, they may if they want.  We want to remind people to stay consistent with the 6-foot rule—we felt that we were much better today.  It is a challenging time.  Also, we erred on the adult meal price—we didn’t account for the breakfast.  So, the updated adult price is $5.  All others aged 1-18 are free.  This is a federal program that we are participating in.  Individuals do not have to be USD 382 students but, of course, we will only serve within our school district boundaries.

We will hold our special BOE mtg for the purpose of approving our Continuous Learning Plan—this is what teachers are developing this week—on Monday, March 30th @ 9:00 am.  This is a change and will be streamed since we must follow state guidelines of fewer than 10 people in a room.

Reminder, school facilities are closed.  We are not allowing the use of our gym or other facilities for community use.

Our community is doing its part to “flatten the curve.”  This will pay off as we work diligently to get ahead of this health crisis.  Remember, it’s all about keeping the rate of new cases below the threshold where healthcare can offer the needed care.  If we do that, we come out the other side in the best shape possible.  We need to reserve those healthcare resources for those who most need it.  We all have a part to play in keeping each other, especially our most vulnerable, safe.

Sincerely,

Tony Helfrich
